From Akarova to Thevenet.

Halle in the Arts

800 years ago, in 1225, Halle was granted its first city rights. Over the centuries, countless artists depicted the city and its people. Den AST exhibits 150 works by 85 artists from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Romantic masters such as Nicaise de Keyser, Antoine Wiertz, and Cyprien Godebski portrayed the Halle cello virtuoso François Servais and his family. Louis Thevenet and his artistic friends Pol Craps, Maurice Flament and Charles Viane show their impressions of Halle. Akarova and Felix De Boeck portrayed the Halle media figure Jan Boon. Local artists such as Jef Borremans, Jules Devedeleer, Victor Lecossois, Armand Moussiaux and Jean-Baptiste and Theofiel Vanhoof take us back to the Halle from grandmother’s time. Georges De Geetere, Mona Martin and Maurice Brocas pay tribute to Our Lady of Halle. Beautiful porcelain pieces recall the Halle porcelain factory, which once counted king Leopold I among its clients.

Also admire the colourful costumes from the wardrobe of the ‘kleine Vaantjesboer’, Halle’s own ‘mannekenpis’, and a number of special objects that illustrate eight centuries of city history, from a 1266 parchmend deed to a piece of ‘den bareel’, the barrier which once separated the Saint-Rochus quarter from the city centre.
