Legend in Lembeek
Easter Monday is a true highlight of the annual calendar in the town of Lembeek, just outside Halle. For over seven centuries, this has been the day the traditional St Veronus procession takes place.
The cabinet bearers carry the silver reliquary on their shoulders along the boundaries of the town, with the entire route covering about 18 km. Behind them, four royal soldier companies march in historical uniforms: Carabiners, Cavalry, Etat Major and the Congo Soldiers Club. The procession stops at every roadside chapel, where the pilgrims are invariably treated to gin and snacks.
