Louis Thevenet painted everyday life around him: a living room, a picturesque landscape, a café interior,... He lived in various places on the coast, in Brussels and the Zenne Valley, and spent the last 14 years in Halle. James Ensor described him as a 'master painter of the pleasures of southern Brabant'.
Seven authors delve into various aspects of Thevenet's life and work. Eric Min and Constantin Ekonomidès situate Thevenet in his time and provide a biographical sketch, Jan Melsen discusses him as an important member of the Kunstkring Labeur, Bart Verschaffel and Johan Merckx take a closer look at his oeuvre, Sergio Servellón makes the link with Felix De Boeck and Peter François shows how Thevenet portrayed life around him. Numerous illustrations offer a nice sample of the oeuvre of this headstrong Brabant fauvist. Many canvases by the 'Belgian Van Gogh' are in private collections and have never before been published.
